A Weekend of Word-Class Dressage

The 2025 international dressage season kicked off in style at Alter Real Stud, Portugal, with both the CDI 3* and CDI 4* events featuring top-tier talent from seven nations, including the elite of Iberian dressage. Set in the scenic Alentejo region, Alter Real offered top-tier competition and earned rave reviews for its impeccable organization, modern infrastructure, and warm, welcoming atmosphere.

 

CDI 3*: A Test of Resilience

The CDI 3* kicked off with grey skies and heavy rain, but the riders were undeterred, delivering some truly outstanding performances.

On Day 1, Mafalda Galiza Mendes stole the spotlight, dominating both the 5- and 6-Year-Old FEI Preliminary classes. She scored an impressive 79.600% with Quiebro das Arcas and 78.000% with Belcanto, respectively. Julia De Ridder, representing Germany, clinched the top spot in the 7-Year-Old FEI Preliminary with a solid 76.000% on Faridero. Meanwhile, in the Junior Team, António Soares and Épico das Figueiras set the bar high with a strong 72.000%, proving their mettle despite the tough conditions.

Day 2 saw António Soares and Épico das Figueiras seize yet another victory, this time in the Junior Individual with a strong 72.500%. The Australian duo, Kate Kyros and Intro K, lit up the Young Riders Team with a very consistent test, scoring 73.000%, proving they’re a force to be reckoned with. Justine Esteve and Voulez Vous stole the spotlight in the Prix St. Georges, delivering a breathtaking performance to claim first place with a dazzling 75.130%. Not to be outdone, Júlia De Ridder and Zaccory triumphed in the Inter A, securing victory with a solid 70.500%.

The highlight of the day, however, was the Grand Prix — a nail-biting contest where Nuno Chaves de Almeida and Lizarran claimed the top spot with 67.413%, narrowly edging out Vasco Mira Godinho and Marquês dos Cedros (67.304%) and Daniel Pinto with Licor da Toula (67.043%). The intensity was palpable, as each rider fought for the win in a thrilling finish.

Day 3 brought the much-awaited sunshine, and the action on the arena was just as bright. Justine Esteve and Voulez Vous maintained their momentum, securing victory in the Inter I with a solid 72.382%. Julia De Ridder and Birkhofs Diamantinos followed suit in the Inter B, clinching first place with a score of 73.200%. Mafalda Galiza Mendes continued her dominant run, taking the win in both the 5-Year-Old FEI Final with Quiebro das Arcas (81.200%) and the 6-Year-Old FEI Final with Belcanto (80.400%). Frederico Mexia and Offley Plus rounded off the day with a strong performance, claiming the 7-Year-Old FEI Final with 78.600%.

In the Grand Prix Special, Vasco Mira Godinho enjoyed a double podium finish: taking top honors with 70.681% on Marquês dos Cedros in his international debut and finishing third with Limbro da Hermida (67.830%). Nuno Chaves de Almeida slotted into second place with Lizarran, scoring 68.957% for Brazil.

From Storm to Sunshine: The Spectacular CDI 4* at Alter Real

After a short break, the highly anticipated CDI 4* at Alter Real Stud marked a dramatic shift in the weather. Gone were the grey skies and rain of the CDI 3*, replaced by brilliant sunshine and mild temperatures that set the stage for a thrilling weekend of top-tier dressage. The atmosphere was electric, with packed stands and a lively VIP area offering top-tier hospitality. Competitors were full of praise for the impeccable organization and stunning facilities, cementing Alter Real’s status as a leading international equestrian venue. The event also reached a global audience through live streaming on Clip My Horse, showcasing the incredible performances of 48 riders from six countries: Portugal, Brazil, Spain, Australia, Germany, and the Netherlands.

 

The CDI 4* kicked off with an exceptional level of competition, and Day 1’s highlight was the Grand Prix, where top riders delivered some thrilling performances. João Torrão & Lírio MVL claimed first place with a solid 69.869%, showcasing their growing consistency and delivering another beautiful, elegant ride. Alejandro Mendez Ascencio & Gavião dos Cedros weren’t far behind, securing second with 69.631%, while José Garcia Mena & Gladiador do Lis rounded out the top three with 69.587%, capping off a strong start to the competition. The younger horses made a strong impact as well. Diego Lopez and Lisonjero De Vida wowed the crowd with an impressive 79.600% in the 5-Year-Old FEI Preliminary, while Claudio Castilla Ruiz and Pastor das Figueiras topped the 6-Year-Old FEI Preliminary with a solid 78.000%, showcasing their potential for the future.

Day 2 of the CDI 4* brought the crowd to their feet, with the Intacol Grand Prix Freestyle delivering electrifying performances that showcased the best in rhythm and artistry. João Torrão & Lírio MVL stole the spotlight with a phenomenal Kur, showcasing an impressive degree of difficulty and earning an artistic score of 81.080%: the pair claimed first place with a total score of 75.515%. José Garcia Mena & Gladiador do Lis followed closely in second with 75.130%, while Vasco Mira Godinho & Limbro da Hermida rounded out the top three with 73.190%.

In the Prix St. Georges, Michael Ruijgrok and Mauricio dazzled with a score of 70.735%, while José Garcia Mena and Jumeaux clinched victory in the Inter A with 71.971%. The young horses kept up the high standard. Diego Lopez and Lisonjero De Vida raised the bar in the 5-Year-Old FEI Final, earning a jaw-dropping 80.000%. Alba Fontela and Koko De Paraiso impressed in the 6-Year-Old FEI Final with a stunning 79.400%, and Julia De Ridder and Faridero kept their winning streak alive in the 7-Year-Old FEI Final with 76.929%.

The final day of competition saw the Garaman Grand Prix Special take center stage, with Alejandro Ascencio and Gavião dos Cedros claiming victory with a solid 70.000%. They were closely followed by Claudio Castilla Ruiz aboard Jota das Figueiras (68.894%) and Mariana Assis Silva with Iji HP (68.5511%), both delivering strong performances. In the Inter I, Michael Ruijbrok and Mauricio shone, securing first place with an impressive 72.382%. José Garcia Mena and Jumeaux triumphed in the Inter B with a score of 68.703%, while Marta Fernandes and Feel Good VO took top honors in the Under 25 Grand Prix with a stellar 70.755%. The Young Riders Individual class was highly competitive, with Kate Kyros and Intro K edging out the rest with a 69.382% to take the win.
